Lesson 6
First, we did a community building icebreaker and asked them “What is their favorite winter movie?” Then we began with what paragraph shrinking is and did an example of paragraph shrinking with them together. After everyone understood, we moved on to read the book “Colors of awesome- 24 Bold Women Who Inspired the World” by Eva Chen and specifically focused on two women, Mamie Johnson and Sandra Day O’Connor. Each of the students had their own copy of the readings, but we did the paragraph shrinking interactive anchor chart together as a group. Then we ended the lesson with an exit ticket where the students had to read or we read it to them and had to do the paragraph shrinking on their own. Something that went well in this lesson would be all of the students were paying close attention and were putting in their best effort. Something that was a weakness would be that we had two stories to do with them but we were not able to do two examples in the time frame we ended up only doing one with the students.
All of the objectives were met. Students will be able to effectively summarize a paragraph by identifying the main idea and important details and condense them into a 10 word or less main idea statement. Evidence of this would be the exit ticket that the students did at the end of the lesson.
From this lesson I learned that I could have added an SLO for the sentence expansion since that was one of the main focuses in the lesson. For the next lesson I am going to make sure that I have an SLO for each component of the lesson. This experience Influenced my professional development by making sure I worked on my time management skills.
